I do a lot of food research before I travel, trying to find the best places to eat wherever I go. Sometimes, when you are going to a place like Paris, this is an easy task. But in the case of Strasbourg it was very difficult. Of the few restaurant recommendations I could find, most were closed and all featured the local Alsatian cuisine we had experienced the night before at Le Clou. As yummy as Le Clou was, we could not stomach another meal like that. So we went in search of another option. And it wasn't easy. It seemed like every restaurant in the historic section of Strasbourg was all Alsatian all the time, and very very touristy. And then we stumbled upon Kobus, about a block from the Cathedral, smack in the middle of mega tourist-ville.
The menu called to us. French, not Alsatian, with a bit of a modern twist. The owner was warm and welcoming. We had no idea of knowing if this place was good. How could it be, given it's location? Fearing the drastic possibility of wasting a precious meal, we sat down and crossed our fingers.
And wow were we surprised! This restaurant was totally amazing, in fact one of the best meals we've had on this trip. Interesting preparations, exceptional ingredients. Foie Gras tower with langoustines and black rice...need I say more?
Sometimes, when you are feeling hopeless in a restaurant wasteland, just use your foodie smarts and dig a little deeper. You never know what hidden gems you will find!
